Case Study – Brand name rank increase in search for a software development company

Client – a software development company

The trigger

When searching for this client’s brand (company name) in Google, the client’s name was often not visible in the first few search results.

This is often the case when the company name or brand name is either generic or when there are several companies with the same name.

In this case, the company name was generic, competing with a functional, as opposed to branded, search. It’s generally a good idea to try to show in search engine search results for your company name / brand name, even if your brand name is more generic than you’d prefer.

Lessons Emphasized

  • When a potential client searches for your company or brand name, you generally make a better impression in their mind when you show up near the top in search results. When you don’t, they start to wonder if your company is legit.
  • The client has been able to punch above their weight. This improvement in ranking is solid, especially given that the keyword difficulty associated with their company name is reasonably high / competitive.
  • Establishing your brand identity is increasingly important as generative AI (e.g. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot) gains traction. You’re going to want your company name to surface.
